It is related from 'A'isha that Fatima, peace be upon her, the daughter of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, sent to Abu Bakr to ask for her share of the inheritance from what the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, left of the spoils in Madina and Fadak which Allah had given him, and what was left of the khumus of Khaybar. Abu Bakr said, "The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, 'We do not bequeath inheritance. What we leave is sadaqa. The family of Muhammad, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, eat from this property.' I will not alter anything of the sadaqa of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, from the state which it had in the time of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and I will only act in it as the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, acted." So Abu Bakr refused to give Fatima any of it. Therefore Fatima got angry with Abu Bakr on that account and dissociated herself from him and did not speak to him until she died. She lived for six months after the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. When she died, her husband 'Ali buried her at night and did not inform Abu Bakr, and prayed over her. While Fatima was alive, people had esteem for 'Ali, but when she died, 'Ali noticed a change indicating dislike in people's faces. Therefore he sought a reconciliation with Abu Bakr and gave him his allegiance, and he had not given allegiance during those months. 'Ali sent to Abu Bakr, "Come to us and do not let anyone come with you," disliking for 'Umar to be present. 'Umar said, "No, by Allah, you will not go into them alone!" Abu Bakr said, "What do you think that they do to me? By Allah, I will go them!" So Abu Bakr went in to them and 'Ali said the shahada and then said, "We acknowledge your excellence and what Allah has given you and we do not envy you the good which Allah has caused to come to you, but you acted independently of us in the business and we thought that we had a portion in it because of our closeness to the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace." So Abu Bakr's eyes filled with tears. When Abu Bakr spoke, he said, "By the One who has my soul in His hand! I prefer to maintain my ties with the relatives of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, than to maintain ties with my own relatives. As for the conflict which arose between you and me about these properties, I will not be remiss in seeing that good is done in it and I will not abandon anything which I saw the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, do with them, without doing it." Then 'Ali said to Abu Bakr, "I promise you that I will give allegiance in the afternoon." When Abe Bakr had prayed Dhuhr, he went up the minbar and said the tashahhud and mentioned the business of 'Ali and how he had refrained from giving allegiance and excused him for the excuses he had made. Then 'Ali asked for forgiveness and said the tashahhud and esteemed Abu Bakr's right and said that he had not been moved to what he did on account of any jealousy towards Abu Bakr nor any aversion to the preference which Allah had bestowed on him, "but we used to consider that we had a portion in this business and he acted independently of us and we felt aggrieved in ourselves." The Muslims were happy about that and said, "You have done the right thing." The Muslims were friendly to 'Ali when he returned the correct business."
